Kolberg Orchestral Musician's Chairs

Why Musicians Need Ergonomic Chairs

Most chairs are not designed with a musician’s needs in mind. A typical armless chair, like a kitchen chair or an office chair, is designed to settle the sitter’s weight into the back of the chair and accommodate passive activities such as classroom learning, dining, and conversing.

In contrast, musicians need to sit up straight with a neutral spine, with feet grounded on the floor for stability. They need to maintain a 90º angle in their knees and a greater than 90º angle between their thighs and back. And a musician needs to move freely around the chair, unimpeded by arms or a wide back.

Kolberg musicians’ chairs are developed in close cooperation with orthopedists, physiotherapists and - of course - professional musicians. They keep in mind four design factors which optimise chair ergonomics:

Height: The chair needs to be the right height to achieve optimal posture in your legs and hips. It should be tall enough to keep your hips slightly higher than your knees, but short enough that you can keep your feet flat on the ground. All Kolberg "Comfort line" orchestra chairs feature pneumatic height adjustment. A safety pneumatic spring mechanism allows fluid, smooth, silent height adjustment by means of a release lever.

Tilt
: The worst thing you can do for your back as a musician is play on a seat with a backward tilt. A seat with this “depth” will press into the back of your knees, decreasing blood flow; root you to the back of the seat; and force you to round your back and tilt your hips forward to compensate. Thanks to the pneumatic spring, Kolberg chairs have a backrest which provides support even when seated in the foremost seating position. The removable backrest can be adjusted in height fluidly and silently by means of a knurled screw. Almost all Kolberg orchestral chairs can be adapted to every body type and every sitting posture, thanks to a wide variety of adjustment options. The user-friendly knurled screws and the pneumatic spring release lever with break-proof bearing enable a comfortable adjustment while seated. The desired position, once set, is steady.

Cushioning
: You’ll spend several hours on your chair practicing each week, so it should be comfortable, but not so plush that you sink into it. That would disrupt the perfect posture you’ve worked so hard to achieve. Kolberg seats have a 4 cm thickness of high-quality breathable foam rubber cushioning – though a foam rubber thickness of 2.5 cm is available as an option. The backrest cushioning is a 3 cm thick layer of high-quality breathable furniture-grade foam rubber.

No arm rests
: Normally chairs are more comfortable with armrests, but music chairs should not have armrests - in order to allow free movement. Many instruments require musicians to move their arms and elbows around. Kolberg chairs have rounded front edges which forestall leg fatigue and circulatory problems. The back support reduces the effects of damage caused by poor sitting positions.

Here Are Three Reasons Musicians’ Chairs Are Worth the Investment

  1. A comfortable chair will enable you to play better, because you’re sitting relaxed.
  2. Using an uncomfortable chair will induce sitting pains that can cloud your creativity.
  3. Using an uncomfortable chair will lead to bad posture, which over time can lead to health issues.

Even when you’ve found your dream ergonomic chair, the key to preventing pain and discomfort is to alternate your posture throughout the rehearsal.  Sitting for too long can have a negative impact on health, and that all whose job involves prolonged sitting should regularly stand, move and generally change their body position. There are also micro-stretches and twists you can perform while seated to loosen up your back and shoulders.
